Can we have the envelopes please?
The Divide, actor-director Perry King’s impressively crafted and uncommonly compelling drama about a Northern California rancher beset by drought and Alzheimer’s disease, has been chosen Best Picture of 2018 in balloting for the second annual C&I Movie Awards. And King himself was voted Best Actor for his outstanding performance in the lead role of Sam Kincaid, a man struggling to make peace with a past he has begun to forget.
Three other C&I Movie Awards go to Woman Walks Ahead, a period drama detailing the real-life relationship between Swiss-born, New York-bred artist Catherine Weldon and Lakota chief Sitting Bull (played by Michael Greyeyes) in the Dakota Territory of the 1880s. Jessica Chastain claimed Best Actress honors for her acclaimed portrayal of Weldon, while Susanna White was named Best Director and Steven Knight picked up the prize for Best Screenplay.
Longtime C&I reader favorite Sam Elliott was named Best Supporting Actor for his performance as the tough-loving brother of a self-destructive singer-songwriter (played by actor-director Bradley Cooper) in A Star is Born. Veteran film and television actress Tyne Daly was voted Best Supporting Actress for her memorable turn as a stagecoach passenger with profoundly mixed emotions about her final destination in Joel and Ethan Coen’s The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
Here is a complete list of nominations for this year’s C&I Movie Awards. Winners (which appear in red) were chosen through online balloting that ended Tuesday, February 19. Nominees were chosen by the Cowboys & Indians magazine staff.
