Thanks to AI, the late country legend stars in a music video for his patriotic anthem “My Home.”
Just in time for Independence Day celebrations, a long-delayed patriotic anthem by The Charlie Daniels Band is finally being released.
But wait, there’s more: Even though Daniels himself is no longer with us, he’ll be making a return appearance in an accompanying music video.
“My Home,” the newly unearthed song, was originally recorded in 2014 for a Macy’s Fourth of July television special. It was prominently featured during the broadcast — but was never commercially released. As the Daniels organization focused on touring, new recording projects, and later navigating the challenges that followed Daniels’ death in 2020, the recording was largely forgotten.
Last year, however, Charlie Daniels Jr., Charlie’s son, revisited the song and began the process of determining whether it could be released. After extensive research, discussions with the tune’s writer, Bill Schermerhorn, and a lengthy search for the final mastered recording, the project got the green-light from all parties involved. The master recording was ultimately located with the assistance of Schermerhorn and co-writer Doug Katsaros, allowing the track to move forward for release.
But what about the music video?
Initially, Charlie Jr. set out to produce a simple lyric video to accompany the song’s release. But what began as a straightforward promotional project quickly evolved into something much more elaborate after Charlie Jr. started experimenting with emerging artificial intelligence video technology.
Using the AI-powered platform, he uploaded the restored recording and explored a variety of visual concepts inspired by the song’s themes of patriotism, faith, and appreciation for America.
“I originally just wanted a lyric video for the song,” Charlie Jr. admits. “I was learning completely on the fly, trying to understand how the system worked — what prompts it needed and how to fine-tune each scene. I spent several days obsessing over it until I finally had something that felt right."
Charlie Jr. says the project took an unexpected turn when he discovered the platform’s animation capabilities. “What started as a basic slideshow with lyrics suddenly became a full-fledged music video. When I saw what it could do, my mind was blown.”
While acknowledging the limitations of current AI technology, Charlie Jr. readily embraced the creative possibilities that the platform offered. The result is a visually rich and emotionally rousing production that captures the spirit of the song while paying tribute to his father’s enduring legacy.
“It’s certainly not perfect,” Charlie Jr. says. “There were challenges and compromises along the way. But considering it was built by an amateur experimenting with AI, I’m incredibly proud of how it turned out.”
Just as important, the experience has sparked ideas for future projects drawn from the extensive Daniels vault.
“Now that I’ve got this one under my belt,” Charlie Jr. promises, “you can bet there will be more to come.”
