Cowgirl Up! at the Arizona's Desert Caballeros Western Museum

The Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenburg, Arizona, has showcased the art and frontier history of the American West for half a century. But in recent years, “Arizona’s most Western museum” has become renowned for its annual Cowgirl Up! Art from the Other Half of the West Invitational Exhibition & Sale, which recognizes female artists who preserve and embody the Western spirit and lifestyle alongside their male counterparts. “You would have to travel to all the other major art towns in the West to see the breadth and depth of what we will have here at one time and in one place,” says Mary Ann Igna, the museum’s interim director.

The Desert Caballeros Western Museum promises that in 2010 — the museum’s 50th anniversary year — the month-long cowgirl celebration will exceed all expectations. The fifth annual event’s opening sale weekend parties and previews will be held March 26 – 28. After Saturday night’s Bash ’n Bid Gala, which includes an artists’ awards dinner and special auction, the Cowgirl Up! exhibition will be open to the public through May 2. Featured artists include Shawn Cameron, Deborah Copenhaver Fellows, Terri Kelly Moyers, Donna Howell-Sickles, Cynthia Rigden, and Sandy Scott.
