Revisiting Russell's Masterworks
The Masterworks of Charles M. Russell: A Retrospective of Paintings and Sculpture, edited by Joan Carpenter Troccoli, provides a fresh and deeply personal exploration of the life and work of Russell, the man who “acted out every American boy’s dream of life in the wild West” before capturing it in oil and bronze. The book delves into Russell’s beliefs, inspirations, and influences in his artistic portrayal of cowboys, outlaws, lawmen, and Indians. Part art interpretation, part artist biography, and part Western history, this book may offer the most holistic and in-depth review of Russell’s work to date.
