The Man in Black makes the list
To mark the 30th anniversary of MTV — which kicked off way back on Aug. 1, 1981 — the folks at Time Magazine have come up with a list none-too-subtly titled “The 30 All-TIME Best Music Videos.” As you might expect, the rundown is top-heavy with pop, rock and hip-hop. But they’ve made room for at least one incontestable classic featuring the late, great Johnny Cash: “Hurt,” the quietly devastating video — filmed just seven months before Cash’s death — directed by filmmaker Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo, Never Let Me Go). “It won a slew of awards, remains many people’s favorite video of all time and tugs at the heartstrings upon each and every watch,” writes Time Magazine’s Glen Levy. “By the time it ends with Cash closing a piano and brushing his hands over it, his epitaph has not so much been written as filmed.”
