Lambtastic Culinary Event

The American Lamb Board is helping support the 15th annual Trailing of the Sheep Festival, so it is no surprise that lamb will be prevalent on the event's menu. “One of the highlights is the Art and Lamb Foodie Fest featuring some of our Valley’s finest chefs and restaurants,” reports Executive Director, Mary Austin Crofts.   “Friday evening is filled with free lamb tastings while they last – which is sometimes not very long.”The 15th annual Trailing of the Sheep Festival will be held Friday, October 7 through Sunday, October 9 in the Wood River Valley of Idaho.  Honored as one of the Top Ten Fall Festivals in the World by MSN Travel, the festival celebrates a century-and-a-half-long tradition of moving sheep from mountain summer...

Big Ranch, Big City

Big Ranch, Big City

Texas chef Lou Lambert's first cookbook (cowritten with food and travel writer June Naylor), doesn't disappoint. It is full of recipes I am itching to try: Wood-Roasted Chicken with Mexican Chocolate Chile Rub, Grilled Coriander Salmon with Mint-Cucumber Relish, Slow-Smoked Pork Butt with Vinegar Barbecue Sauce, Corn and Cheddar Pudding, Citrus Scones, Buttermilk Chocolate Cake. The ingredients and preparations are straightforward, but with a modern touch and an attention to seasonal ingredients and local traditions that are a Lambert signature. If you've got a smoker or a charcoal grill and some hungry friends, this book will provide all the inspiration you need for a memorable summer feast. And with its beautiful photography and Texas flair, Big Ranch, Big City will be my go-to gift...

True West History Dinners

Cartwright’s Sonoran Ranch House is partnering with Bob Boze Bell, executive editor of True West Magazine, to bring to life “True West Moments” in Arizona history every other Wednesday. Bell, a longtime Cave Creek resident and respected Arizona historian and artist, will entertain and enlighten with stories of the state’s colorful past – including where all the bodies are buried.Menus will be customized to reflect Bell's talks, so if he speaks about Arizona's cattle ranching days, you'll be sure to enjoy a chuck wagon dinner with steak, beans, biscuits, and a dessert of apple fritters or suet pie. "Rocky Mountain oysters" may even make an appearance as an appetizer. Seating will be banquet-style, so you'll have an opportunity to get to know your...

The Colt Revolver In the American West

The Autry National Center recently reopened the Greg Martin Colt Gallery, featuring The Colt Revolver in the American West — an exhibition that explores the history of Samuel Colt’s revolutionary revolver in the American West. “I am pleased to showcase the Autry’s spectacular collection of Colt firearms in a manner that provides a narrative for the scope and monumental impact of guns in the American West,” says Daniel Finley, Autry president and CEO. “In this ongoing installation, we hope visitors are fascinated by the history and importance of an object that brought violence as well as peace to an entire region.” Drawn solely from the Autry’s renowned collection, the exhibition provides an interesting look at one of the most popular and...

Aspen Summer

Aspen Summer

There's no better place to beat this summer's brutal heat than the high mountain town of Aspen. I was lucky enough to spend the weekend there for the Aspen Food & Wine Classic in June. The highlight? Chef Marcus Samuelsson (Red Rooster Harlem) and Master Beer Sommelier Marc Stroobandt's presentation, "Shining Stars: Classic Belgian Beers Meet Creative American Cuisine." The charismatic duo provided surprising pairings of ice cold Belgian beers with cheese (like Stella Artois with Kerrygold Dubliner Irish Stout cheese) and chocolate (Leffe Blonde's clove and nutmeg flavors starred opposite Green & Black's dark chocolate), while Master Chef Samuelsson entertained with stories about growing up in Sweden, his new Harlem restaurant, and learning to cook the perfect fried...

Marcus Samuelsson's Tips for the Perfect Fried Chicken

Marcus Samuelsson's Tips for the Perfect Fried Chicken

Can an Ethiopian-Swede make fried chicken like your memaw used to make? That is the question buzzing through Harlem courtesy of Marcus Samuelsson's new Red Rooster eatery. The chef of Aquavit and Top Chef Masters fame — who recently made Harlem his home — is adding Southern favorites (mac and cheese, oxtail stew) to his Stockholm staples (gravlax, Swedish meatballs), and word on the street is that he's giving plenty of well-seasoned skillets a run for their money. Stop by August 24 at 6 for a Chicken and Champagne dinner, featuring Champagne by the glass, Champagne cocktails, chicken and waffle bites, Rooster deviled eggs, and curried chitlins. Or drop in any Sunday for the bountiful gospel brunch, with Lenox Smorgasbord, lamb and sweet potato hash, and hearth-baked mac and...

Did Butch really go That-a-Way?

According to The New York Daily News, two Wild West historians are convinced that legendary outlaw Butch Cassidy didn’t really die in Bolivia after all – and may have in fact written his own “biography” before dying of old age 30 years after the 1908 shootout dramatized in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
