The Netflix reboot of the beloved series will premiere July 9.
Take two: More than 40 years after NBC aired the final episode of Little House on the Prairie, Michael Landon’s beloved series based on the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Netflix has announced a premiere date for the streamer’s new take on the source material.
The reboot is described thusly by Netflix: “Part hopeful family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West, this fresh adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s iconic semiautobiographical Little House books offers a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier.”
The first season will consist of eight episodes, all of which Netflix will drop on July 9. And those episodes must have been mighty pleasing to the Netflix brass: Season 2 has already been green-lit.
The initial teaser trailer, released Monday by Netflix, is narrated by Alice Halsey, the new series’ Laura Ingalls, who says: “Once upon a time, Ma and Pa and Mary and Laura left the Big Woods of Wisconsin and moved to the prairie, where a new life was waiting for them. Every day and every night was an adventure. And even though they were all alone, and very small against the sky and the stars, they were happy. Because they were a family, and they were together.”
“This show is a love story about a family,” showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine told the Netflix site Tudum. “They’re a family you want to be with, you want to know, you want to spend time with. That’s really at the core of what Little House on the Prairie is about: a family that is there for each other, that tells stories to each other, tells stories about themselves.”
Sonnenshine said she “fell deeply in love” in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books “when I was 5 years old. They inspired me to become a writer and a filmmaker, and I am honored and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new audience.
“The first season is inspired by Little House on the Prairie, which is actually the third book in the series. The characters talk about their life before they came to the prairie — we might meet a few characters from their past.”
“Little House on the Prairie has captured the hearts and imaginations of so many fans around the world,” says Jinny Howe, vice president of drama series for Netflix, “and we’re excited to share its enduring themes of hope and optimism with a fresh take on this iconic story. Rebecca’s vision threads the needle with an emotional depth that will delight both new and existing fans of this beloved classic.”

In addition to Alice Halsey, the cast includes Luke Bracey (Elvis, Hacksaw Ridge, Little Fires Everywhere) as Charles Ingalls, Laura’s father; Crosby Fitzgerald (Crime 101, Palm Royale) as Laura’s mother, Caroline Ingalls; and Skywalker Hughes (Joe Pickett) as Mary Ingalls, Laura’s older sister.
Fun facts, courtesy of Netflix: Since its original publication in the 1930s, the Little House book series has sold more than 73 million copies in more than 100 countries and has been translated into at least 27 languages. Although it’s been a half-century since the 1974 show first debuted, Nielsen reports that the nostalgic series garnered 13.25 billion minutes of viewing in 2024 alone.
