Demi Moore and John Hamm co-star in the Taylor Sheridan-produced series premiering Nov. 17 on Paramount+.
“Welcome to the oil business!”
It’s hard to tell whether Billy Bob Thornton’s Tommy Norris intends that as a warm welcome or a dire warning in the first trailer for Landman, the latest Taylor Sheridan-produced series bound for Paramount+. But it’s clear that Norris, an oil company crisis manager, is playing a game with astronomically high stakes.
“The oil and gas industry makes $3 billion a day in pure profit,” he says. “And it’s only getting bigger. But before any of that money is made, you’ve got to secure the land and manage the people. That’s my job. First part’s pretty simple. It’s the second part that can get you killed.”
Based on Boomtown, the well-received 11-part Texas Monthly podcast that was written and hosted by Christian Wallace, Landman is set, according to Paramount, “in the proverbial boomtowns of West Texas, and is a modern-day tale of fortune-seeking in the world of oil rigs. The series is an upstairs/downstairs story of roughnecks and wildcat billionaires who are fueling a boom so big, it’s reshaping our climate, our economy and our geopolitics.”
“I’m a fixer and a foreman,” Thornton described his character to Vanity Fair. “Even though I work with the head guy, I also work very closely with the people out in the field. I check the wells every day, get the information to give him. I deal with the landowners, and if something happens on that land, if there’s an accident on the rig, I’ve got to solve that problem and go deal with the lawyers.”
In addition to Thornton, the series stars Demi Moore (G.I. Jane, A Few Good Men), Ali Larter (Heroes), Michelle Randolph (1923), Mustafa Speaks (Joe Pickett), Jacob Lofland (Joker: Folie à Deux), Kayla Wallace (When Calls the Heart), James Jordan (Yellowstone), Mark Collie (Nashville), Paulina Chávez (The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia). Jon Hamm (Mad Men) will star in a recurring guest role with Andy Garcia (The Godfather Part III, Ocean’s Eleven) and Michael Peña (End of Watch, Ant-Man) also serving as guest stars.
Landman will premiere Nov. 17 exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and international markets where the service is available. It’s the latest addition to Taylor Sheridan’s growing slate on Paramount+, which includes 1923, 1883, Lioness, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King and Lawmen: Bass Reeves.
