Lily Gladstone of Under the Bridge and Jon Hamm of Fargo also received nominations.
Cheers to Reservation Dogs, the audaciously funny sitcom about restless Native American youths in small-town Oklahoma, and True Detective: Night Country, the gripping Alaska-set mystery starring Jodie Foster and Native American actress Kali Reis. Both series loomed large among the nominees announced Wednesday for the 76th annual Emmy Awards.
And while we admit we’re more than a tad disappointed that C&I cover star David Oyelowo of Lawmen: Bass Reeves didn’t make the cut for the Best Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category, we’re happy to see that Jon Hamm — soon to be seen in the Taylor Sheridan-produced Paramount+ drama Landman — got a nod for his flamboyant performance as a North Dakota sheriff who views himself as the law of the land in Fargo.
Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis made Emmy history by being the first Indigenous women nominated for acting.
Among the first-time Emmy nominees in acting categories: Lily Gladstone, for her performance in Under the Bridge as Cam Bentland, a British Columbia police officer investigating a horrific crime in her suburban community; D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, for his performance in Reservation Dogs as Bear Smallhill, the self-styled leader of his loose-knit Rez Dogs gang; and Kali Reis, for her performance in True Detective: Night Country as Alaska state trooper Evangeline Navrarro, who reluctantly joins forces with small-town police chief Liz Danvers (sister Emmy nominee Jodie Foster) to solve a horrific crime.

“I am so touched by this nomination,” Gladstone said in a prepared statement. “I wholeheartedly share the honor with the stellar cast of Under the Bridge, who brought such deep compassion and unmatched talent to telling Reena Virk’s story. Every beating heart on screen gave so much of themselves to honor her legacy, and I’d especially like to thank Vritika, Archie and Riley, I am so inspired by you all. Thank you to Quinn Shephard, Samir Mehta, Liz Tigelaar, Gina Gammell and Riley Keough for bringing this story to light and being champions of radical empathy. I’m forever grateful to have been brought along for the journey.”
Gladstone and Reis made Emmy history by being the first Indigenous women nominated for acting. Echo, the Marvel Comics-inspired limited-run series showcasing newcomer Alaqua Cox as a deaf Indigenous woman-warrior, received a nomination in the category for Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes.
