Looks like Horizon is his sole focus now.
Just hours after Paramount Network announced Yellowstone would be returning Nov. 10 for its “final cycle” of episodes — and on the very same day we marked the sixth anniversary of the Taylor Sheridan-produced series — Kevin Costner made the definitive announcement on social media Thursday evening: He won’t be involved with the long goodbye.
Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Costner had cut ties with the series that has earned him a Golden Globe for his potent portrayal of patriarch John Dutton, owner, operator and avid protector of a ginormous Montana cattle ranch. Evidently, he’s too laser-focused on completing (and promoting) his four-picture Horzion: An American Saga epic to look in his rearview mirror.

As Costner posted on Instagram: “I want to reach out and let you know that after this long year and a half of working on Horizon and doing all the things that’s required, and thinking about Yellowstone, that beloved series that I love, that I know you love, I just realized that I’m not going to be able to continue season five B or into the future. It was something that really changed me. I loved it. And I know you loved it. And I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be returning and I love the relationship we’ve been able to develop and I’ll see you at the movies.”
So does that mean Josh Lucas, who has played John Dutton in flashbacks throughout the series, will be pressed into service — maybe with some CGI aging magic — to fill the gap? Who knows? Watch this space for further developments.
