Feel the history of Texas’ oldest sport and prepare for an experience you do not want to miss.
If you are looking for the heart and soul of Texas, look no further than Mesquite. Home to the Mesquite Championship Rodeo (held every Saturday from June to August), the Official Rodeo Capital of Texas has its deep western roots on full display every time you visit.
The Mesquite Championship Rodeo made its debut in 1957 at the Mesquite Arena and has become one of the most televised rodeos in the world. It is rare to have a rodeo stay in the same place and integrate into the community, so Mesquite is lucky to have one still operating after more than 60 years. It’s even been nominated for Rodeo of the Year several times by the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association!
Through the years, the Mesquite Championship Rodeo has undergone an evolution, including new owners and a $2 million renovation, bringing a more exciting rodeo season each year. Renovation highlights include jumbotrons, which give a better view of the action on the floor, and upgraded VIP suites. Every summer, fans go to watch their favorite events like saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, bareback riding, team roping, barrel racing, tie-down roping, and, of course, bull riding.
When the doors open, families create everlasting memories on the arena’s dirt floor with bounce houses, petting zoos, roping lessons, pony rides, and the chance to meet some of the cowboys and cowgirls competing that night. During the show, there are two opportunities for the kids to live out their cowboy and cowgirl dreams with Mutton Bustin and the Dash for Cash Calf Scramble. Attend during one of the many theme nights held throughout the season, such as $1 hot dog nights, teacher appreciation, and nights dedicated to military service members and first-responders.
To attend a rodeo in Mesquite is to be a part of the community and a piece of history. So whether you are a lifelong rodeo fan or a first-timer, a night at the rodeo will bring out the cowboy spirit in everyone with savory Texas barbecue and the best two-stepping music. Visit Mesquite for the most authentic Texan entertainment you’ll find in the state.
