The neo-western thriller starring Thandiwe Newton of Westworld opens Sept. 16 only in theaters.
Last week, we offered a first look at God’s Country, the gripping neo-western thriller about a professor at a rural Montana college who’s driven to extremes while coping with inappropriate behavior on campus — and potentially violent threats near her isolated home.
Now we’re pleased and privileged to speak with Julian Higgins, director and co-writer of the film, which is based on a story by James Lee Burke and opens only in theaters Sept. 16. In our wide-ranging conversation, we talk about why he thinks Thandiwe Newton of Westworld was the perfect choice to play his protagonist, the casting of familiar faces from Yellowstone — Jefferson White and Tanaya Beatty — in key supporting roles, how Sam Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs partially influenced his drama — and the splendor of the Montana locations where God’s Country was filmed.
