From Sons of Anarchy producer Kurt Sutter comes a new look at the Old West.
Netflix is locked and loaded to start shooting a new Western series. The Abandons, from producer Kurt Sutter (Sons of Anarchy, Mayans M.C.), has begun filming Season 1 in Calgary with Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) and Gillian Anderson (The X-Files) front and center as mothers locked in a bloody feud.
According to Netflix, The Abandons “tells the story of a group of diverse renegade families living on the fringes of society in 1850s Oregon. These lost souls band together to fight corrupt forces and do anything they can to save their land. The Western series will explore the jagged line between survival and law, the consequences of violence, and the corrosive power of secrets as this makeshift family battles to keep what’s theirs.”
Headey plays Fiona Nolan, a strong-willed matriarch who adopts four orphans will stop at nothing to protect her family. She squares off against Fiona Constance (Anderson), who will stop at nothing to protect and grow the mining fortune she inherited from her husband and then doubled as she aims to consolidate the Van Ness clan’s power in the unforgiving frontier.
Other members of the cast include Nick Robinson (Maid, A Teacher) as Elias Teller, Diana Silvers (Booksmart, Space Force) as Dahlia Teller, Lucas Till (X-Men, MacGyver) as Garret Van Ness, Lamar Johnson (The Last of Us, Brother) as Albert Mason, Aisling Franciosi (The Nightingale, God’s Creatures) as Trisha Van Ness, and Natalia del Riego (Hail Mary, Promised Land) as Lilla Belle.
C&I reader favorite Michael Greyeyes and Manhunt star Patton Oswalt also are featured, along Brían F. O’Byrne (The Bastard Executioner), Clayton Cardenas (Mayans M.C.), Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers (Three Pines), Haig Sutherland (Lucky Hank), Jack Doolan (The Boys), Jonathan Koensgen (Reacher), Katelyn Wells (Ginny & Georgia), Marc Menchaca (Ozark), Michael Ornstein (Sons of Anarchy), Sarah Grace White (The Bastard Executioner), Michiel Huisman (Rebel Moon, Echo 3), Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy, The Walking Dead), and Toby Hemingway (The Crossing, Sun Gazer).
“I am fascinated by the metamorphosis of good into evil,” Sutter told Tudum.com. “What must transpire to drive the morally sound to become the dangerously corrupt. The Abandons explores those complex compromises through the most powerful human instinct — the love and protection of mothers.”
