The celebrated country singer-songwriter has released a spirit-lifting single.
Lacy J. Dalton wants to raise your spirits with her new single,“What Don't Kill Ya." And if it sounds a tad unconventional for the celebrated singer-songwriter, that's only because she won't be tied down to any one particular sound.
“If you label me anything,” she says, “you’d probably label me an outlaw if you knew me very well. That’s really how I feel. I feel like it’s mostly marketing people who put fences up around music.
“But I learned my lesson early on. After I got my first record deal, when I first began performing in casinos in Reno and other places, I started out in a part of Harrah’s that wasn’t really the main showroom. And I had to learn to play to a lot of people who’d never heard of me, didn’t know who I was, didn’t know what kind of music I did, and didn’t care. So I was able to do all kinds of music. And I was able to find a way to appeal to broad audiences. Which I think has really allowed me to work as long as I have at what I love to do. I’m like Willie Nelson — I don’t ever want to retire.”
As for “What Don’t Kill Ya,” an irresistably encouraging ode to the benefits of overcoming obstacles, “My friend Terry and I wrote a song about Wes Hertzog, eight-time World Saddle Bronc Champion and 1995 All-Around Champion on the Senior Pro Rodeo circuit about 20 years ago. The lyric goes 'The last greatest cowboy I knew, taught us all what the good cowboys know. He said you might be hurtin’, but one thing’s for certain, ya got to go on with the show.’
“So let’s cowboy and cowgirl up and when we’re going through hell, just keep going, We’ll be stronger for it, and it’ll teach our spirit its stuff!”
