Clint Eastwood and Kirsten Dunst also claim major prizes voted by C&I readers.
12 Mighty Orphans, director Ty Roberts’ inspiring drama based on the real-life exploits of a Fort Worth orphanage football team that attracted national attention during the Great Depression, scored big at the Fifth Annual C&I Movie Awards.
The Sony Pictures Classic release was voted the top prizes for Best Picture and Best Director. But its victories didn’t end there: Martin Sheen triumphed in the Best Supporting Actor category for his portrayal of Doc Hall, the hard-drinking but big-hearted doctor at the Masonic School for Orphans; and Vinessa Shaw claimed Best Supporting Actress honors for her portrayal of Juanita Russell, the supportive wife of coach Rusty Russell (Luke Wilson).
Two other feature films cracked the winner’s circle: Cry Macho, which picked up prizes for Best Actor — Clint Eastwood as Mike Milo, an aged ex-rodeo star seeking one last shot at redemption — and Best Screenplay (Nick Schenk and N. Richard Nash); and The Power of the Dog, represented by Best Actress honoree Kirsten Dunst for her performance as Rose Gordon, the widowed mother who inadvertently comes between two brothers on their sprawling Montana ranch.
Winner of the C&I Movie Award for Best Documentary: The Mayberry Effect, Chris Hudson’s affectionate look at the faithful fans who gather annually in Mt. Airy, N.C. to celebrate their favorite TV sitcom, The Andy Griffith Show.
Here is a complete list of nominations for this year’s C&I Movie Awards. Winners (which appear in red, along with links to where they can be streamed) were chosen through online balloting that ended Wednesday, Jan. 26. Nominees were chosen by the Cowboys & Indians magazine staff.
