The Declaration of Independence
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
This passage, which contains some of the most powerful words ever articulated, represented for President Abraham Lincoln the moral standard to which the United States should strive. Lincoln declared the Declaration of Independence “a rebuke and a stumbling-block to tyranny and oppression” and believed it to be a statement of principles that should guide the country in how to interpret the Constitution.
