Maverick Fine Western Wear has been a staple of the historic Fort Worth Stockyards for more than 30 years.
If you frequent Fort Worth, Texas, you undoubtedly know the name Maverick. The store is a Cowtown institution, its bold name greeting visitors from a striking mural at the corner of Main Street and Exchange Avenue.
It seems fitting that Maverick Fine Western Wear, in the heart of the Stockyards National Historic District, is the product of a Fort Worth-native fashionista whose roots in the area run deep.
“The city of Fort Worth is very special to me because this is where my family has lived for six generations—it is home,” says store owner and founder Gayle Hill. “The Stockyards became a major part of my life in 1975 when my then-husband, Steve Murrin, secured the lease of the Cowtown Coliseum and brought rodeo back to the Stockyards. It was a great time! The Stockyards were coming back to life.”
Hill started with a gift and souvenir shop called The General Store and Trading Post in 1983. Four years later, the storefront just across the street became available, and the rest is retail history.
One of the first built in the area (in 1905), the Maverick building predates the coliseum and was originally a hotel. Over the years, it has been occupied by several different bars, a liquor store, a café, a barber shop, a private club, a night club, and a jewelry store. Throughout most of its history, the name Maverick has been associated with it—something Hill very much wanted to keep.
Today, the Maverick is a Fort Worth staple, offering custom-fit hats and boots, a dynamic assortment of apparel, Native American and modern Western jewelry and accessories, and a well-curated collection of Western décor and gifts. Patrons will also enjoy the finest selection of leather and fur coats for men and women as well as a great selection of infant and children’s clothing.

Talented silversmiths and artisans can be found at trunk shows throughout the year, featuring the most distinct pieces from their collections. Customers attend to see seasoned and new vendors alike, with quality products from their different lines.
For patrons seeking precise fit and design, Maverick furnishes an in-house hat conformateur to take exact measurements of head patterns. The sky is the limit for customers wanting an inventive, quality creation in collaboration with Greeley Hat Works. Custom-fit boot services are available at the store for an array of options, including exotic skins and personalized brands and initials through Black Jack Boots.
True to its reputation as a Cowtown institution, Hill contributes to various auctions, fundraisers, and balls throughout the year, and the store participates in outfitting fashion shows. Each year, vendors and customers donate toys and clothing at Maverick’s Holiday Party for the Inter-Community Agency, located in the Northside neighborhood.
Maverick is the only place in the Stockyards where you can shop till you drop and then recharge at an in-store saloon, all while a friendly associate wraps up any gifts in their exclusive, cow-print paper. Simply stop in and make yourself at home.
