Who couldn’t use a personal shopper? How much easier and more efficient would the help of an expert make reworking your wardrobe, assembling ensembles for a vacation or special occasion, and picking out the perfect gifts for family members and friends? One-on-one attention has largely disappeared with the evolution of the retail industry and rising popularity of the mega-mall. But storeowner Kelly Leinneweber says good old-fashioned customer service is still the practice at Trends & Traditions, an upscale boutique in the Texas Hill Country.
Leinneweber remembers a time when shopping was a special experience, at least in small towns like San Marcos where her family opened Trends & Traditions in 1966. “When you went shopping, personal service was something that was always offered — helping you find the right fit and style for your figure, your favorite colors,” she recalls. “My mother did business here that way. When she was ordering from the markets she would see a dress and say, ‘That looks like Betty,’ and we’d write that name on it.”
Since returning to the family business 15 years ago, Leinneweber has continued to uphold her mother’s high standards of service. “We still take care of our customers the same way,” she says. “If someone is looking for something special, I know I have the resources to find it for them, whether it is in the store or not.”
And now customers don’t even have to travel for individual attention — a simple phone call or e-mail will suffice. Yet, Leinneweber is proud to say that most of the store’s longtime customers still enjoy making the trip, arriving to shop in person the latest stock of designer apparel, accessories, and artisan jewelry by names like Coreen Cordova, Ivy Jane, Dian Malouf, Hoopla, Brighton, Jon Hart Design, and Seasonal Whispers.
