Hawaii’s chiefs once donned elaborate plumage to provide spiritual protection and convey status and power. Capes, cloaks, and staffs were fashioned from the finest feathers, which artisans harvested from exotic birds and wove into stunning handmade creations. For the first time, about 75 of these historic garments and accessories will be shown on the mainland thanks to a partnership between the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum in Honolulu.
