Plein Air Painting with a Palette Knife with Hadley Rampton
As if plein air painting isn’t challenging enough, what with the weather, the insects, who knows what kind of unknown, let’s add a palette knife as your primary painting tool! But never fear, in this workshop, students will be guided through the process and hopefully, have some fun!
This workshop will run over three days. We will spend the first day in the gallery, running through some fundamentals (color, value, positive vs. negative space, simplifying detail) and familiarizing everyone with palette knife painting. On days two and three we will head outside into the gorgeous country surrounding Durango and have a go at taking our palette knife painting skills into the open air. Palette knife painting is very much about opening oneself up to the unexpected mark-making of the knife and working with it, rather than against it. At least a beginning level of drawing and painting knowledge is recommended for this workshop.
