A native of the Pacific Northwest, Morris Graves lived in remote settings, deliberately removed from the spotlight after an acclaimed 1942 exhibition at MoMA. He maintained his geographic and cultural distance, drawing inspiration from closely observing nature and imbuing his subjects — mainly animals and plants — with poetic and symbolic qualities. A “focused ensemble” of Graves’ works during a pivotal period from the 1930s to 1950s includes early paintings and exquisite works on paper.
