Ethan Hawke stars in the limited-run series set to premiere Sept. 23 on FX.
Looks like Tulsa King Sylvester Stallone isn’t the only one raising a ruckus in Oklahoma these days.
Ethan Hawke — the remarkably versatile C&I cover star whose credits include The Magnificent Seven, In a Valley of Violence, The Kid, Strange Way of Life, and The Good Lord Bird — stars as Lee Raybon, a disreputable but dedicated Tulsa investigative reporter and self-described “truthstorian,” in The Lowdown, an eight-episode FX limited-run series from Reservation Dogs co-creator Sterlin Harjo.

According to FX: “When the publication of Lee’s latest exposé — a deep dive into the powerful Washberg family — is immediately followed by the suspicious suicide of Dale Washberg (Tim Blake Nelson), the black sheep of the family, Lee knows he’s stumbled onto something big. Following a trail of breadcrumbs Dale has left behind, urging someone to dig deeper into the circumstances surrounding his death, Lee does just that.
“What Lee finds is that Betty Jo (Jeanne Tripplehorn), the grieving widow, seems to be more interested in her brother-in-law Donald Washberg (Kyle MacLachlan), a gubernatorial candidate, than in her dearly departed. And powerful forces want to prevent Lee from learning anything more.
“Lee has also gained the attention of a mysterious stranger who seems to appear whenever Lee least expects it. Refined and suave, Marty (Keith David) shares Lee’s appreciation of great literary minds, and seems unusually interested in his investigation into the Washberg family.”

The “Tulsa noir” series — created by Harjo, who also serves as an executive producer — is set to kick off Sept. 23 on FX. Each episode will be available for streaming on Hulu the day after its FX premiere.
In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Harjo — who’s a citizen of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma and is of Muscogee descent — described the ties between his Tulsa-set series.
“Rez Dogs was my love letter to rural Oklahoma and where I grew up,” he said. “The Lowdown is my love letter to Tulsa, where I currently live. You see the beauty and the darkness. You see everything.”
