The award-winning documentary about two African country singers following their dreams in America is now available for home viewing.
Dusty & Stones, the hugely entertaining award-winning documentary about the country music artists often referenced as The Cowboys from Swaziland, is guaranteed to lift your spirits and encourage you to sing along. Three years after its U.S. premiere at the prestigious DOC NYC Film Festival and subsequent theatrical run, it’s finally available for streaming this week on Amazon Prime and Apple TV.
Directed by Jesse Rudoy, the film focuses on cousins Gazi “Dusty” Simelane and Linda “Stones” Msibi, a struggling country music duo from the tiny African Kingdom of Swaziland who long for their big break. When they are unexpectedly invited to record in Nashville and to compete in a Texas battle of the bands, Dusty and Stones embark on their long-awaited first pilgrimage to the ancestral heart of country music. Over a momentous ten-day road trip through the American South, the duo brings their music to life in a top recording studio — and the Grand Ole Opry — as they immerse themselves in the culture they’ve long felt part of from afar.
Our senior writer Joe Leydon had the opportunity to interview Dusty, Stones and Rudoy shortly before their film premiered at DOC NYC, and later caught up with them at the 2023 Nashville Film Festival — where Dusty & Stones earned the Jury Award for Best Music Documentary Feature.
