The streaming service will not present a third season of the drama based on C.J. Box’s book series.
Bad news for fans of Joe Pickett: Paramount+ announced Tuesday the streaming service would not green-light a third season of the neo-Western crime drama based on the best-selling book series by C.J. Box.
Box offered a glimmer of hope for fans of the program Wednesday when he posted on X (the platform formerly known as Twitter) “We’re disappointed and we hope the very talented and very able people behind the show can find a new home for it in the coming months.” If not, however, “we’ll always be proud of Joe Pickett and we treasure the experience of meeting and working with the producers, writers, and actors.”
If Joe Pickett does indeed somehow return for a Season 3, it wouldn’t be the first time the series has moved to a new home. Originally commissioned by Charter Communications’ Spectrum Originals, the show began airing on that service in late 2021. But before the start of Season 2, Charter announced it would be shutting down operations for Spectrum Originals. Paramount+ held streaming rights to the series because it is produced by Paramount Television Studios, so the streamer started airing Season 2 episodes in June 2023. Both seasons will remain available on Paramount+ for the time being.
For the benefit of those who tuned in late: Michael Dorman (For All Mankind) plays the title role in Joe Pickett, a crime-solving Wyoming game warden who often encounters human predators in and around his small town of Saddlestring.
During Season 2, which concluded last July, Pickett discovered a hunter murdered in the mountains, and realized the heinous crime was just one in a series of gruesome killings. To solve the case and catch the killer, Joe had to deal with a radical anti-hunting activist, a ghoulish set of twins living off the grid — and his own tortured past. Joe and his wife, Marybeth (Julianna Guill), pieced together clues that indicated the murdered men weren’t as innocent as they seemed. But just as they came close to solving the crimes — with help from Joe’s buddy Nate Romanowski (Mustafa Speaks), a mysterious survivalist and Special Ops vet — they discovered the culprit was well placed to end their investigation. And, quite possibly, their lives.
