The prequel series lasted only a single season on The CW.
We received good news and terrible news today from The CW: Walker, the Walker, Texas Ranger reboot starring C&I cover guy Jared Padalecki, has been renewed for a 13-episode Season 4, but the prequel Walker: Independence has been cancelled by the network after a single season.
The latter series, according to The Hollywood Reporter, wrapped its 13-episode run in early March with a mere 440,000 live same-day viewers. Presumably, those are not the kind of numbers that are acceptable to Nextar, the budget-conscious new owners of The CW.
Set in the late 1880s, Walker: Independence focused on Abby Walker (Katherine McNamara of Arrow and Shadowhunters), an affluent Bostonian whose husband is murdered before her eyes while they’re on their journey out West. On her quest for revenge, Abby joins forces paths with Hoyt Rawlins (Matt Barr of Hatfields & McCoys and Walker), a lovable rogue in search of purpose, and Calian (Justin Johnson Cortez), an Apache scout who often finds himself torn between two cultures, in the Texas town of Independence.
Other members of the cast included Katie Findlay, Greg Hovanessian, Lawrence Kao, Philemon Chambers, and Gabriela Quezada.
All 13 episodes of Walker: Independence remain available for viewing on The CW app. For the time being, at least.
