Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren head the cast of the new Yellowstone prequel slated to premiere Dec. 18.
Get a load of that: Harrison Ford — cast in 1923 as Jacob Dutton, seasoned patriarch of Montana’s Dutton Ranch — doesn’t take kindly to threats, veiled or otherwise, by potential interlopers. “You attack my family,” he says, “and it’s the last thing you’ll ever do.”
And take a listen to this: Helen Mirren — playing Cara, the steel-willed matriarch of Dutton Ranch — sounds even tougher than her spouse. “Men kill quick with a bullet or a noose,” she says of those who have made the incalculably stupid mistake of crossing her. “But their fight is with me. And I kill much slower.”
And holy cow, look there: Timothy Dalton is Donald Whitfield, the treacherous, take-no-prisoners villain of the piece who covets the Dutton Ranch — among other things. He’s asked point blank: “How much land do you want?” He responds: “I want the whole valley.”
But wait, there’s more: Just when you may be thinking, “What this preview really needs is a teasingly fleeting glimpse of Michael Greyeyes,” well, there he is.
All this, and… a lion?!?!?
Yes, you guessed it: They dropped another trailer Sunday evening in the middle of Yellowstone for 1923, the latest prequel to Taylor Sheridan’s astronomically-high-rated Paramount Network drama, and the first sequel to Sheridan’s critically acclaimed and audience-embraced 1883. As Leonardo DiCaprio memorably said in Django Unchained: “Gentlemen, you had my curiosity. Now you have my attention.”

Set to premiere Dec. 18 on Paramount+, 1923 will reflect upheavals of the early 20th century, a period when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition and the start of the Great Depression all drastically affected life in the Mountain West. In addition to Ford, Mirren and Dalton, the cast includes Darren Mann (Animal Kingdom), Michelle Randolph (A Snow White Christmas), James Badge Dale (Hightown), Marley Shelton (Scream), Brian Geraghty (Big Sky), Aminah Nieves (Blueberry) and Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones).
And, who knows, maybe Michael Greyeyes?
By the way: 1923 currently is slated for a two-season run, with eight episodes for each season. In addition to the Dec. 18 premiere on Paramount+, Paramount Network will also host a linear airing of the debut episode immediately following a new episode of Yellowstone as a special simulcast event. Just to get viewers, you know, interested. The second episode will not air until Jan. 1. To help us celebrate New Year's Day, maybe?
