In the latest Predator monster rally, Amber Midthunder stars as a Comanche Nation warrior who battles a fearsome extraterrestrial.
For those of you who have ever wondered what might happen if a Comanche warrior woman ever tangled with a marauding extraterrestrial — we’ve got your movie.
Prey, the latest entry in the Predator franchise, will be available for streaming on Hulu starting Aug. 5. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane), the new film is a kinda-sorta prequel to the first film of the series — Predator (1987), starring Arnold Schwarzenegger — and stars Amber Midthunder (TV’s Legion and Roswell, New Mexico), a Native American actress of the Fort Peck Sioux Tribe, as the chief human adversary of the first Predator to visit Mother Earth on a hunting trip.
According to Hulu: “Set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, Prey is the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.”
Trachtenberg directed Prey from a script by Patrick Aison (Jack Ryan), with John Davis (The Predator) and Jhane Myers (Monsters of God) on hand as producers. The showbiz website Deadline reported Monday that while bringing this project to the screen, “providing an accurate portrayal of the Comanche, which would rings true to Indigenous peoples, was key. Myers, an acclaimed filmmaker, Sundance Fellow and member of the Comanche Nation herself, is known for her attention and dedication to films surrounding the Comanche and Blackfeet nations, and her passion for honoring the legacies of the Native communities. As a result, the film features a cast comprised almost entirely of Native and First Nation’s talent, including Midthunder, newcomer Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp (Sooyii), Michelle Thrush (The Journey Home) and Julian Black Antelope (Tribal).”
