Mark your calendars: Dark Winds, a new weekly drama based on the popular Leaphorn & Chee mystery novels by Tony Hillerman, is set to premiere June 12 on AMC and AMC+. C&I reader favorite Zahn McClarnon (Longmire, The Son) and Kiowa Gordon (The Red Road; Roswell, New Mexico) play lead roles in the series, which counts Robert Redford and George R.R. Martin among its executive producers.
What’s it all about? According to AMC:
“Set in 1971 on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley, Dark Winds follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (McClarnon) of the Tribal Police as he is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes. The closer he digs to the truth, the more he exposes the wounds of his past. He is joined on this journey by his new deputy, Jim Chee (Gordon). Chee, too, has old scores to settle from his youth on the reservation. Together, the two men battle the forces of evil, each other, and their own personal demons on the path to salvation.”
The supporting cast includes Jessica Matten as Bernadette Manuelito, a hard-working Navajo police sergeant who works closely with Leaphorn; Noah Emmerich as FBI Special Agent Whitover, who needs help from Leaphorn and Chee while pursuing armored car robbers; Deanna Allison as Emma Leaphorn, Joe’s supportive wife; and Rainn Wilson of The Office as Devoted Dan, a devious missionary who recruits followers to the gates of his used car lot.
