The musical biopic from Australia director Baz Luhrmann is set for a June 24 theatrical release.
Well, we have to admit: The newly released trailer for Elvis left us all shook up — and even more eager to see the musical biopic directed by Baz Luhrmann (Australia, Moulin Rouge!).
Set for a June 24 theatrical release, the film stars up-and-comer Austin Butler (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) as Elvis Presley and two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks as The King’s long-time manager, Col. Tom Parker. The screenplay —credited to Luhrmann, Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce and Jeremy Doner — focuses on the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker, spanning over 20 years as it details Presley’s rise to unprecedented stardom against the backdrop of the evolving American cultural landscape. Also figuring into the story: Priscilla Presley (Olivia DeJonge), one of the most significant and influential people in Elvis’ life.
Among the supporting players: Helen Thomson (Kangaroo Jack) as Elvis’ mother, Gladys; Richard Roxburgh (Hacksaw Ridge, Moulin Rouge!) as Elvis’ father, Vernon; David Wenham (The Lord of the Rings) as Hank Snow; Kelvin Harrison Jr. (The Trial of the Chicago 7, The High Note) as B.B. King; Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog) as Jimmie Rodgers; Josh McConville (Fantasy Island) as Sam Phillips; and Austin native Gary Clark Jr. as Arthur Crudup.
