The Boss shares a performance video for the song “Sundown” from his new Western Stars film and soundtrack.
In the run-up to the October 25, 2019, release of both the film and accompanying soundtrack album Western Stars — Songs From the Film (Columbia Records), Bruce Springsteen has shared a performance video of the song “Sundown.”
Western Stars marks Springsteen’s directorial debut. The soundtrack album pulls the audio from the film, which includes live performances of every song from Springsteen’s most recent studio album of the same name, as well as a cover of Glen Campbell’s “Rhinestone Cowboy.”
Backed by a 30-piece orchestra (a first for the Boss), Springsteen performs all 14 songs with special guest (and wife) Patti Scialfa. It’s an ode to the West, even if the documentary film captures live performances in Springsteen’s native New Jersey, in a century-old barn on his almost 400-acre horse property, Stonehill Farm, in Colts Neck.
Weaving archival footage and Springsteen’s personal narration with song to tell the story of Western Stars, the performance documentary invites the viewer into an intimate and atmospheric space with an older, wiser, but ever-vital Springsteen — still, as he’s been for some five decades — a powerful troubadour of the times.
