Husband-and-wife duo The Dryes debut the new track “Simple Truth,” off the EP Vol. 1.
Not everyone can make a love song sound as convincing as husband-and-wife duo The Dryes. Based out of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the couple combine earnest lyrics with whimsical strumming, layered harmonies, and alluring steel guitar on their single “Simple Truth” to gracefully convey a key to human connection.
Their affection for each other on the sentimental track — one of four on their new EP, Vol. 1, available July 13 — comes through authentically in uninhibited lyrics that are both realistic and romantic. When Derek and Katelyn sing about overcoming flaws, they reveal a deep understanding of each other.
“We all want people to connect with who get us. In order to do that, we have to be open despite what’s happened in the past,” Katelyn says.
“We wanted to write a song about the idea that we are each other’s ‘Simple Truth,’” she says. “It’s hard to open up sometimes, but ‘I'll open up to you. Tear down these blinds, let the starlight shine through.’ When times get tough it's actually a sign to push through, not isolate ourselves. ‘Simple Truth’ is about having that vulnerability person in your life that keeps you grounded.”
