Looking ahead to Cinco de Mayo, here is a refreshing cocktail that skips the obvious spirit.
Not all Cinco de Mayo drinks are required to be a margarita or are required to include tequila. Some, like the TX Whiskey TX Mex cocktail from Firestone & Robertson Distilling Company, utilize whiskey. Both spirits are Texas favorites and both include notes of cinnamon. Moreover, it reminds me that the general at the head of Mexican army, Ignacio Zaragoza, at the Battle of Puebla fought on May 5, 1862, was born in what is now Goliad, Texas.
TX Whiskey TX Mex

2 ounces TX Whiskey
1½ ounces orange juice
¾ ounce lime
½ ounce agave nectar
2 dashes cumin
1 jalapeño slice, for garnish
Mix ingredients in glass. Top with ice and garnish with jalapeño slice.
