A tequila-based, fresh-fruit cocktail that makes early May’s frozen margaritas a distant memory.
Cinco de Mayo has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean one ought to put away the tequila, especially fine tequila meant for either mixing or sipping neat (and definitely not meant for shooting). For a tequila-based cocktail that makes the margarita a distant dream, try the Strawberry Fields from Tequila Camarena.
Strawberry Fields
2 tablespoons fresh basil, roughly chopped
2 ounces Camarena Reposado
½ cup strawberry simple syrup*
2 ounces fresh lime juice
Splash of orange liqueur
6 sliced strawberries
Muddle basil and tequila in a cocktail shaker. Add strawberry simple syrup (recipe follows), lime juice, and orange liqueur. Fill with ice, shake, and strain into a highball glass over ice. Garnish with sliced strawberries on the rim and ribbons of basil mixed in the drink.
* Strawberry Simple Syrup: Combine 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, and 4 – 5 strawberries, sliced in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and let simmer for 10 – 15 minutes. Cool the syrup and strain.
