Jewel performs “My Father’s Daughter” live on the Ryman stage at the Grand Ole Opry.
Multitalented singer-songwriter (and January 2009 C&I cover star) Jewel made her musical debut to the world in 1995 with the release of her first studio album, Pieces of You. With its now-classic hits “You Were Meant for Me,” “Foolish Games,” and her first song to reach No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100, “Who Will Save Your Soul,” the album eventually became one of the bestselling debut records of all time, going platinum a whopping 12 times. Since then, Jewel’s music has taken on many different genres, from pop to folk to rock to country.
Jewel’s most recent album, 2015’s Picking Up the Pieces, marked her 12th studio record. The lead single, “My Father’s Daughter,” features Dolly Parton on the recorded track, but for her Opry performance Jewel sings a beautiful acoustic version that showcases her strong soprano voice.
“My Father’s Daughter” emphasizes Jewel’s intricate and emotionally driven songwriting and seems to reflect autobiographically upon the singer’s heritage and childhood growing up in Alaska, metaphorically searching for gold while living in a log cabin with no plumbing and accompanying her father on gigs in bars. Written in 2008, the song was performed as a solo for years before Jewel recorded it with Parton.
