DESCRIPTION

Join us in honoring artist Star Liana York at a chocolate and sweets reception for the New Mexico sculptor whose Western and wildlife-themed sculptures, dating from early in her esteemed career, will be on display. The Sorrel Sky showcase of York’s miniature works in a rare opportunity to view her bronze and silver sculptures never before shown in the West. Special Showing continues through February.

York has been receiving awards for her sculptures since she began making art. One of the award-winning works on display is “Postal Exchange,” a miniature bronze picturing a mailbag changing hands between two riders from the backs of rearing horses. In 1981, “Postal Exchange” received a First Place award at the 48th Annual Exhibition of The Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers Society in Washington, D.C.

Since moving to the Southwest in 1985, Star Liana York has been creating works that reflect her interest in the people, animals, environment and history of the region. She is an avid horsewoman, riding daily on her ranch near Abiquiu, New Mexico, where she finds inspiration surrounded by the vast open vistas.
York says of her creative process, “When a character emerges from a work I am sculpting, I feel touched at a deeply intimate, subconscious level. It is the essence in a work of art that makes it intensely personal and entirely universal at the same time.”

York is one of “Southwest Art’s” 30 most influential artists. In 2013, she was selected as an Honorary Artist at The Millicent Rogers Museum Taos, NM and received the Artist Choice Award at the National Cowgirls Museum and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, TX. Her monumental bronze sculptures are held in collections across the country including the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.; Miami Zoo in Miami, Florida, and Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos, New Mexico.
