Lodge-Style Living
A Couple’s Log Home Makes a Cozy Winter Retreat in Rockford, Michigan

by Lisa A. Scafuro

Nestled among piney woods in the quaint town of Rockford, Michigan, is the picturesque log home of Mike and Debbie Powers.

A naturally landscaped setting of red and white pines, mixed hardwoods, and other flora indigenous to the southwest Michigan area surrounds the 10-acre property. Situated on a sloping hill overlooking Cedar Creek, the Powers’ residence is an ideal spot to glimpse deer, wild turkey, and other wildlife grazing along the sandy banks of the creek.

"This is as close to a perfect site for a log home as you’ll ever find," says the Powers’ contractor Bruce Heys. "You walk out the door, and it opens to paths leading directly to the creek."

Located just 10 miles northeast of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Rockford is known primarily as a riverfront community. The White Pine State Trail (a 92-mile linear state park) runs through downtown Rockford along the scenic Rogue River, which provides ample opportunities for fishing (salmon, steelhead, trout, or bass), canoeing, and bird watching. In the winter when snow blankets the pine trees and rolling hills, the White Pine State Trail is ideal for snowmobiling. Nearby Pando Winter Sports Park offers outdoor activities such as downhill skiing, snowboarding, and cross-country skiing.
