Take your best shot for the 5th annual C&I Photo Contest
In each issue, Cowboys & Indians shares great Western images shot by some masters of American photography. Now it's your turn.

Whether you're headed for rugged terrain or greener pastures this season, don't forget to pack your camera, because the 5th Annual Cowboys & Indians Photo Contest is developing.
What to enter
The five contest categories are drawn from those subjects of special interest to Cowboys & Indians:
• Portrait: Photographs of cowboys or Indians as individuals or groups.
• Landscape: Photographs of plants and landscapes; geological or climatological features located west of the Mississippi.
• Wildlife: Photographs of animals indigenous to North America inhabiting areas west of the Mississippi.
• Action: Photographs of individuals participating in activities west of the Mississippi or traditional American cowboy or American Indian activities taking place around the world.
• Equine: Photographs of horses.
The prizes
Five category winners will be selected, one for each category. The winning entry and runners-up will be published in the Cowboys & Indians 2010 Photo Essay issue. The 2010 Photo Contest winner will receive $1,000. The winners of each of the five categories will receive $500.
The format
Your image should be submitted electronically to Cowboys & Indians in .JPEG format, no larger than 2MB in size. Please submit your image at 72dpi, but keep a high-resolution version ready in case your photo is selected. For press requirements, winning images will need a 10" x 12" original at 300dpi or greater (image orientation can vary).
How to enter
Send your image to photocontest@cowboysindians.com. In your e-mail, please include your name, age, mailing address, daytime phone number, and e-mail address. Entries must be e-mailed by October 16, 2009.
Details
An entrant must hold all rights to a photograph. For a photo in which a person is recognizable, you must provide a model release from the subject or, in the case of a minor, the subject's parent or guardian. • Reminder: We do NOT accept entries submitted through the mail. Photos previously published or pending publication, or that violate or infringe upon another person's copyright, are not eligible. All photographers amateur or professional, except for individuals affiliated with the USFR Media Group or its subsidiaries, including: employees, Directors, interns and their immediate families (children, siblings and spouses) and others living in their households, are eligible. Cowboys & Indians magazine will solely determine winners' eligibility. Photographs must have been shot by the entrant within the past three years (since October 1, 2006). Submit no more than one photograph per category. Finalists will be asked to submit a high-resolution file. By entering the contest, entrants grant Cowboys & Indians the right to publish and use submitted photographs in print or electronic form in a future issue or issues, for advertising and promotion of the magazine, for exhibition, and for commercial products, including but not limited to Cowboys & Indians publications in perpetuity. Any photograph reproduced will include a photographer credit. Judging will be conducted by the editors of Cowboys & Indians. Winning photographs and selected finalists will be published in a March 2010 issue of Cowboys & Indians. Decisions of the Cowboys & Indians judges will be final. Please do not contact us about the status of entries. The finalists, and only the finalists, will be notified of their status by January 1, 2010. The contest is void where prohibited or restricted by law. Winners may receive additional noncash prizes. Winners must sign an affidavit and license and will be responsible for paying any taxes they may owe on a prize.
