Western Trappings

The time-honored tradition of true craftsmanship

Believing that art extends beyond the bounds of painting and sculpture, four friends and Western craftsmen — a painter/sculptor, a knifemaker, a photographer, and a saddlemaker — decided to host an art exhibition that celebrated all Western mediums, one that recognized the diversity of Western arts.

Trappings, now an annual event in its 21st year, was the first of its kind — an art exhibition that truly encompassed the genre with its display of both fine and functional art. But the exhibition’s eclectic trappings all have one thing in common: They preserve the American West’s time-honored tradition of true craftsmanship. “Trappings connects visitors to this country’s very real history of the rural culture of the West; a culture rooted in the principles of tradition, family, integrity, and hard work,” says Linda Stedman, executive director for Dry Creek Arts Fellowship (DCAF), which produces the exhibition now titled Trappings of the American West.

This year, DCAF is partnering with The Phippen Museum for the first time, taking Trappings to Prescott, Arizona, the self-proclaimed Cowboy Capital of the American West. On display at the musuem from November 12, 2011, to February 19, 2012, the exhibition will showcase paintings, sculptures, and artisan cowboy gear by more than 90 of North America’s top Western artists, including members of the Cowboy Artists of America, Traditional Cowboy Arts Association, and the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame.
