The latest trailer for the Yellowstone spin-off indicates one of Luke Grimes’ co-stars won’t be joining him on the new series.
We have long suspected that Kelsey Asbille would not be joining her Yellowstone co-star Luke Grimes on Marshals, the upcoming spin-off from Taylor Sheridan’s phenomenally popular drama. Indeed, each time CBS sent us a new message about the casting of the new show or its revised title, we couldn’t help noting the conspicuous absence of Asbille’s name.
And sure enough, the latest trailer for Marshals released Friday appears to make it clear: Kayce Dutton, Grimes’ character, is a widower, while his wife Monica, Asbille’s character, is very seriously deceased.
Of course, there always is the possibility that Asbille will occasionally pop up in flashbacks, like Josh Lucas sporadically appeared as the younger version of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton in Yellowstone. On the other hand, that could interfere with any plans the producers might have regarding Kayce Dutton’s new status as an eligible bachelor.

In any event, it's certain Luke Grimes will be joined by at least three other Yellowstone alumni in Marshals. Gil Birmingham will be back as Chief Thomas Rainwater, with Mo Brings Plenty returning as Mo, Rainwater’s invaluable ally. And Brecken Merrill will again portray Tate Dutton, son of Grimes’ Kayce Dutton, though his character has aged just a tad since we last saw him.
The official Marshals logline: “With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana. Kayce and his teammates — Pete Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green), Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel), Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) and Miles Kittle (Tatanka Means) – must balance the high psychological cost of serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence with their duty to their families, which for Kayce includes his son Tate (Merrill) and his confidantes Mo (Brings Plenty) and Thomas Rainwater (Birmingham) from the Broken Rock reservation.”
Marshals will premiere March 1 on CBS.
