CBS reportedly is considering a “procedural series” with Luke Grimes returning as Kayce Dutton.
For all you folks who have complained, sometimes quite angrily, that you have no desire to pay for an additional streaming service in order to access 1883, 1923, and any other Yellowstone spinoff that producer Taylor Sheridan might have on the drawing board, we might have some good news.
According to reports that appeared late Wednesday afternoon on the Variety and Deadline sites, CBS is considering a new “procedural series,” ala NCIS and FBI, that would have C&I cover star Luke Grimes returning as Kayce Dutton — a sensitive but formidable character who’s already been established as a livestock commissioner and former Navy SEAL.
For the benefit of those who tuned in late: During the final episode of Yellowstone that aired last year on Paramount Network, Kayce signed the entire Dutton Ranch over to Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) and the Broken Rock Indian Reservation for the same price his ancestors paid — $1.25 per acre — back in 1883, when James Dutton (Tim McGraw) and his family settled there. The only restrictions: The massive spread could never be developed, and Kayce, wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and son Tate (Brecken Merrill) would remain on a small parcel of land where they’ve built a house.

Presumably, the yet-untitled new series would lean on Kayce’s continuing work as livestock commissioner — and his experiences as a Navy SEAL — while he does derring-do on a weekly basis for CBS. To be honest, however, that’s pure speculation on our part: The broadcast network has not released any details regarding the premise (or the supporting cast) of the planned Yellowstone spinoff.
It’s probably safe to assume neither Beth (Kelly Reilly), Kayce’s mercurial sister, and Rip (Cole Hauser) will not figure into the new show, since those characters already are committed to yet another not-yet titled Yellowstone spinoff in the works. But who knows? This is Taylor Sheridan’s universe, and we’re just living in it.
Meanwhile, the Season 2 finale of 1923 is still scheduled to stream April 6 on Paramount +. And another Sheridan-produced series — The Madison, starring Michelle Pfeiffer, which may or may not be connected to Yellowstone — is set to premiere later this year, as is Season 2 of Sheridan’s Landman. Watch this space for further developments.
