The veteran writer-producer recalls triumphs and challenges during his run with the epic TV western.
The epic TV western Hell on Wheels — our choice for the best western of the 21st century (so far) — premiered on Nov. 6, 2011, and ended its AMC run on July 23, 2016. But producer John Wirth is proud to say the series continues to be re-watched by faithful fans — and, just as important, continues to attract new audiences.
“People discover it all the time,” he told me in a recent Zoom interview. “And I cannot tell you how many people I meet who, when they find out I worked on that show, talk to me about what that show meant to them.
“And that is really a pleasure — to have been involved with something that has entertained people. There are a lot of people who can say that now because there’s so much content out there. But this show was really special.
“And it lives on. And people are discovering it every day.”
Here’s my conversation with John Wirth.
