This luxury Montana outpost offers everything one might fancy from a $13 million barn.
It’s not just the “absolutely stunning views of craggy peaks, multiple mountain ranges, and a dramatic, expansive open valley,” as described on the Black Mountain Ranch website, that has me yearning to inhabit this perfectly rustic, renovated barn nestled in Montana’s Madison Valley. It’s the way the sun sets along the fence line and how the clouds at dusk roll in above that classic shingled roofline. Perhaps it’s the security implied by the massive gun vault, or the serenity I’m imagining from the turn-key status of this sprawling Big Sky property. Most likely, though, it’s the barn-style simplicity of Black Mountain Ranch’s design. Though topping out at nearly 7,000 square feet of space, complete with two-story windows and custom chandeliers, the main house feels warm and understated—a family home that can be lived in.
Black Mountain Ranch is also, of course, a ranch. It’s a working cattle operation with an existing professional management team and crop production and cattle leases in place. In the last five years, significant improvements have been made, including the construction of a 5-bedroom/4-bathroom manager’s house comprising more than 3,500 square feet and a nearly 2,000-square-foot multi-purpose facility with an office that is also equipped for shop work, processing game, and storage.
Surrounded by wilderness, Black Mountain Ranch is still conveniently located just 10 minutes from Big Sky Airport, 15 minutes from the nearby town of Ennis, and an hour away from Bozeman and Yellowstone. Elk, mule deer, and antelope are the primary wildlife populations at the ranch, though the brokerage company does say that “one may occasionally see grizzly and black bears along with grey wolves traversing below the timber along the Wilderness boundary.”
That’s more than enough to interest me.
