A spirited homecoming leads to festive and refreshing cocktails with Lone Star roots.
The story of a homesick Texan is a familiar one, one that often results in the return of the said Lone Star State native. But Paula Angerstein is the only Texan whose homecoming story includes becoming the first woman and second person ever to be licensed to distill spirits in Texas. Her namesake effort, Paula’s Texas Spirits, which launched in 2005, has now released Paula’s Texas Grapefruit Liqueur. Like Paula’s Texas Orange and Lemon Liqueurs before, Paula’s Texas Grapefruit is crafted in Austin, Texas, from fresh citrus that is selected and peeled by hand. Using only Ruby Red Grapefruit grown in the Rio Grande Valley, Paula’s Texas Grapefruit Liqueur boasts a bright, naturally sweet flavor that can only come from the state fruit of Texas. It mixes well with tequila, whiskey, gin, rum, sparkling wine, and even iced tea.
Angerstein shares two cocktail recipes — one of which includes beer! — with C&I.
