The Miami Vice veteran stars in the new ABC drama set in a North Dakota boomtown.
The Hollywood Reporter likens it to an “illegitimate offspring of Dallas and Deadwood ” — and that’s not far off the mark. Blood & Oil, the new hour-long series premiering at 9 p.m. ET Sunday on ABC, is equal parts glossy soap opera and modern-day Wild West drama. And Don Johnson (Miami Vice, Nash Bridges) is at the center of the action as Hap Briggs, a high-stakes wheeler dealer who appears to have taken life lessons and business tips from the late, great J.R. Ewing.
The nominal leads are Billy (Chance Crawford) and Cody Lefever (Rebecca Rittenhouse), a recently married young couple eager to rise above their working-class roots. Following the largest oil discovery in American history, they pack up and move from their small city to the boomtown of Rock Springs, North Dakota, where dreams come true overnight, and a millionaire is made every day.
Intent on tapping into this explosion of wealth, Billy and Cody set out to start their own business, a coin-operated landromat, which they’ve financed with every penny to their name. After a rough start, however, Billy becomes increasingly eager to cash in on this modern-day gold rush. But when he tries his hand in the oil business, he crosses paths with the baron of the Bakken, Hap Briggs, and his equally powerful wife, Carla (Amber Valletta), as the power couple expands their empire into new territory.
