Kim Stringfellow’s Jackrabbit Homestead traces the cultural legacy of the Small Tract Act in Southern California through photography and audio interviews with historians, past residents, and artists (some of whom reside in reclaimed historic cabins on the land). A past recipient of The Autry’s Theo Westenberger Award, which honors contemporary female artists whose work transforms how we see the American West, Stringfellow explores the age-old urge to flee urban sprawl for a wide-open landscape — and the fierce challenges of trying to settle this harsh and unforgiving swath of land in Southern California’s Morongo Basin region near Joshua Tree National Park.
