“Bridging Worlds – Human, Animal, Divine” with Star Liana York at Sorrel Sky Gallery Durango

DESCRIPTION

This one-woman show, “Bridging Worlds - Human, Animal, Divine,” opening on June 2, 2017 features the bronze works of renowned sculpture Star Liana York. Artist reception is from 5:00-7:00 pm at Sorrel Sky Gallery’s downtown location at 828 Main Ave. The show continues throughout the month of June.

Star Liana York tells stories of life and discovery through her bronzes. Her range of subjects reflect her boundless interest in the people, animals, environment and culture of the Southwest. However, for Star, inspiration is drawn from the world as a whole. From history, the present day and future expectations; deepening her understanding through patient observation, attentive listening, and then accepting what her surroundings are saying. As she assimilates, she creates bridges between worlds. Bridging the worlds between the human, the animal, the divine. In her own words, “When a character emerges from a work I am sculpting, I feel touched at a deeply intimate, subconscious level. It is the essence in a work of art that makes it intensely personal and entirely universal at the same time.”

York has been named one of “Southwest Art’s” thirty most influential artists. In 2013, she was selected as an Honorary Artist at The Millicent Rogers Museum Taos, NM and received the Artist Choice Award at the National Cowgirls Museum and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, TX.

Her monumental bronze sculptures are held in collections across the country including the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos, NM, and Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.

Shanan Campbell Wells, owner of Sorrel Sky Gallery, finds herself constantly amazed by the vibrancy that seems to pulse through Star’s work. “Star has the unique ability to create bridges between worlds and that is something that sets her apart.”
