G. Designs Natural Fashion

Growing up in her native Peru, Gretty Zueger knew from an early age that she wanted to be a fashion designer, but it was a dream not shared by her parents. “I came from a very conservative background,” Zueger recalls. “My mother never supported my desire — I was encouraged to be a doctor, a lawyer, or an engineer.” Zueger chose engineer, then devoted the skills she acquired in her studies, including the nuts-and-bolts of how to run a production business, to pursuing her fashion aspirations. Ten years ago Zueger founded G. Designs Natural Fashion, and in 2002 she opened her own store in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

“When I [first] went to Santa Fe and saw the clothing sold there, I wanted to create something that reflected that concept and that culture,” she says. So Zueger designed her store in Santa Fe’s signature style, with bright colors, handmade wood furnishings, and “a little touch of Peruvian.” In fact, all of Zueger’s casual, feminine concepts are made from 100 percent Peruvian cotton in her native Peru.

The unique designs of her embroidered blouses and tops have evolved over the years, but what has remained consistent is Zueger’s belief that fashion should flatter the figure. “I just want my customers to realize that whatever their shape, they can wear anything,” she says. “I am always thinking about how to make them look their best. They feel they can trust my designs to make them look nice and to feel positive about themselves.” And her customers get the message. “So many of them tell me that every time they go to Santa Fe, they have to come in and buy at least one more piece for themselves or someone else.”
