Remarkable Women of Taos
A celebration of the creative spirits of Northern New Mexico.
“Where I was born and where and how I have lived is unimportant. It is what I have done with where I have been that should be of interest,” said Georgia O’Keeffe, one of the most celebrated artists of the last century and a woman who transformed the world’s perception of the American Southwest.
O’Keeffe is one of the many women who did extraordinary things during their time spent in New Mexico, and one of the many being celebrated this year as part of the Remarkable Women of Taos exhibition. Throughout 2012, the city is hosting several events highlighting the lives and contributions of the creative and adventurous spirits who have inhabited and left their mark on the town known as the Soul of the Southwest. Honorees include abstract expressionist painter Agnes Martin, patron of the arts Mabel Dodge Luhan, San Ildefonso Pueblo pottery artist Maria Martinez, modernist Beatrice Mandelman, and socialite and fashion icon Millicent Rogers.
The commemoration kicks off on March 22, the 100th birthday of Martin whose groundbreaking abstract expressionist art was greatly influenced by her time spent in Taos. The Harwood Museum will unveil a showcase of her little-known early works.
