Old Cow Town

Try out the Old West in Colorado's authentic resort town of Saguache

After a long horseback ride through the sweeping rimrock valleys of south central Colorado, you finally see the historic town of Saguache on the horizon. You make your way past the wooden barricade of Old Cow Town and tie up outside the Mad Cow Saloon & Restaurant, where you unwind while enjoying a steak dinner before boarding your horse at the Livery Stable and settling in at the Sunshine Social Club hotel. Later on you can head down the street to the dance hall for a night of live music and merriment.

When vacationing in Old Cow Town — an authentic reproduction of an Old West town that opens each year from March 15 through December 31 — it’s like taking a trip back in time. At the drop of a cowboy hat, families can spend a few days in the 1880s nestled in the heart of the San Luis Valley.

Old Cow Town offers a true frontier experience with adventure aplenty. After checking out the antique tractor collection at the Old Cow Town Museum, head outdoors to enjoy all that Saguache County has to offer. Fish along the Rio Grande. Hike, bike, or ride horseback through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Take a tour of the steep mountain slopes on one of the area’s three working scenic railroads. Visit the tallest sand dunes in North America at the nearby Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. Explore Gunnison National Forest. Or, if there’s snow, strap on your cross-country skis. 877.653.2698, www.oldcowtowncolorado.com
