First Light

C&I's Poem of the Week for 2/22/2012

I wake in the morning and gaze out at the fields,

My heart follows the land and all its bountiful yields,

I see the lake, down below some fields away,

The morning mist, rises and beckons me to stay,

The horses, nose down, are waiting for some human touch

So first light of day brings on little treasures, but to them so much,

I lay my hands on their necks, my fingers graze their nose,

I rub their strong bodies, from each a little nicker ebbs and flows,

Then just some care, a touch and grain I give them every day,

My heart is with them, such special friends of humans stay,

Close by our side, carry us many miles at work or play,

That special bond keeps the human world well at bay,

We may join civilization to help sustain our needs,

But our soul lies near the soil, its green grass and weeds,

Before the sun sets in scenes of orange and navy blue,

I thank the great Creator for a life on earth and one more day anew.
